Thai and Filipino massage are among the sought-after massage techniques, but they differ from each other. Techniques and pressure
Our therapists know well how to use rhythmic pressure of fingers, palms and forearms in Thai massage and complement it with gentle stretching. This achieves overall relaxation of your body and often improves range of motion.
Filipino massage is focused on deep work in muscle fibers and attachments. The pressure is higher, but remains controlled and adapts to each client’s perception individually.
What needs it’s suitable for
What problems can our massages help you with?
- For stress relief and better sleep: Thai massage is more suitable, as it works with rhythm and breathing.
- Stiff trapezius, lower back: or you need recovery after exertion, Filipino massage brings more targeted relief in specific areas.
- Recovery after exertion: Filipino massage is also the right choice, as it works directly into the muscle.
- Sedentary work: the best solution for you is to start with Thai massage, which we’ll complement with Filipino on problem areas.
Recommended frequency and duration
For both techniques, we most often choose a duration of 60–90 minutes. And how often to go for the best effect? Thai massage usually suffices at intervals of once every 2–3 weeks, while with significant muscle tension, Filipino massage can be repeated even once a week in a short period; subsequently the interval extends.
Combination and follow-up care
The effect of massages in general can be supported by choosing aroma, mild heat (e.g. hot stone massage), after sports then gentle stretching and proper hydration. The therapist can combine both styles in one session – typically one technique predominates and the other complements the work in a specific area (e.g. neck, shoulder blades).
Safety and contraindications
Generally, massages are a safe technique, provided the massage is performed by an experienced therapist or masseur. In both cases, however, it’s advisable to postpone the massage:
- During fever
- In case of skin infection or fresh injuries
- During pregnancy, prenatal massage with safe positioning is appropriate
Quick decision rule
If you’re looking for help with overall mobility and crave relaxation and a “reset”, choose Thai massage.
If you need to specifically release particular stiffness, prefer the Filipino technique. When in doubt, a combination of both approaches works well after a brief initial consultation, which our therapists will guide you through as the first step.
