Traditional Thai Massage: Relaxation for Body and Mind

Traditional Thai massage, also known as Thai Yoga Massage, helps you relax, improve mobility, and relieve muscle tension. The therapist focuses on the entire body, including the back, gluteal muscles, legs (both front and back), arms, head, and shoulders.

The techniques used include applying pressure with hands and feet. No oils or creams are used, and pressure is applied along the body’s energy lines. The massage also includes passive stretching.

How Does a Traditional Thai Massage Work?

Initial Consultation

Upon arrival, please inform the reception of your preferences, areas you’d like to focus on during the massage, and whether you’ve had a traditional Thai massage before. If you have any health issues, such as blood pressure problems, heart conditions, or if you’ve had an injury, please let us know so that we can tailor the massage to your needs. Based on this information, the reception will gladly recommend the most suitable procedure.

Preparation and Start

The therapist will greet you and guide you to the massage room, which has soothing lighting and calming music playing. Based on your preferences, you will be offered clothing suitable for a traditional Thai massage. During this time, you can begin to relax and wait for the therapist to arrive. The therapist will have already received all the necessary information from the reception to fully focus on your massage.

The Process of a Traditional Thai Massage

The traditional Thai massage begins in a comfortable and relaxed position on your back, with the client dressed in loose and comfortable clothing. The massage is usually performed on a massage table at Eden’s Garden, but it can also be done on a mat upon request with the reception.

The therapist starts the massage with gentle stretching and pressure to loosen the muscles and prepare the body for a deeper massage. With rhythmic movements, the therapist stimulates the feet, gradually releasing the energy lines and moving upwards. This process restores the flow of energy and induces deep relaxation.

Tea Serving

After the massage, you’ll have some time to rest and relax. Then, you will be offered a cup of tea, which promotes relaxation and hydrates the body.

Recommended Duration of a Traditional Thai Massage

Authentic traditional Thai massage requires at least 90 minutes for the therapist to adequately perform all massage techniques and targeted stretching. Our experience shows that a longer treatment time is essential for a thorough full-body treatment.

Recommended clothing for Thai massage

For your convenience, we offer free suitable clothing at all our branches.

For regular Thai massage visits, we recommend comfortable and loose-fitting clothing, ideally similar to what you would wear for yoga. Unlike oil massages, where the client wears only underwear, traditional Thai massage is performed fully clothed. Jeans and other tight clothing are not suitable as they can restrict movement.

  • Loose Pants: Lightweight, breathable, elastic at the waist, allowing for free movement.
  • Loose Shirt: Lightweight, breathable, with short or long sleeves, loose for comfort.

Consultation on Intensity During a Traditional Thai Massage

We recommend discussing your preferred strength and intensity of the traditional Thai massage with the reception beforehand, so they can relay this information to the therapist. This ensures that the massage is tailored to your needs from the start, whether you prefer a gentler or more intense experience.

During the massage, you can communicate with the therapist at any time to adjust the intensity or address any comfort issues. Our goal is for you to feel as relaxed and rejuvenated as possible.

How Does a Traditional Thai Massage Work?

1. Rhythmic Pressure and Acupressure:
The massage begins with the application of rhythmic pressure on specific points of the body. The therapist uses their thumbs, palms, elbows, knees, and feet to work on energy pathways, known as "Sen Lines". This initial step helps to balance the energy flow within the body and brings deep relaxation.

2. Stretching and Passive Yoga:
This is followed by a stretching phase, where the therapist gently guides you into various positions reminiscent of passive yoga. This part of the massage releases muscle tension, increases flexibility, and promotes overall well-being for both the body and mind.

3. Deep Massage for Tension Release:
In this phase, the therapist focuses on specific problem areas. They use deeper pressure and techniques such as kneading and circular movements to effectively release tension and restore the body's balance.

4. Final Phase and Relaxation:
The massage concludes with a gradual reduction in pressure intensity. The therapist uses gentle techniques to calm the body and allow for complete relaxation. A relaxing technique, such as light stroking, may be added at the end to ensure the body is fully relaxed and prepared for the rest of the day.

How often should you have a Thai massage?

The ideal frequency of Thai massages depends on your needs and lifestyle:

For overall relaxation and stress relief:
Once every 2-4 weeks to maintain muscle relaxation and flexibility and prevent tension build-up.

For specific problems or pain:
If you suffer from chronic pain or specific issues, weekly sessions may be beneficial until improvement is noted, then less frequently thereafter.

For athletes or physically demanding jobs:
People who engage in strenuous physical activities may benefit from weekly massages to aid muscle recovery and prevent injuries.

For beginners:
Start with massages once a month and adjust based on how your body responds.

When Not to Get a Thai Massage?

Thai massage is not recommended during pregnancy and menstruation. In such cases, we gladly offer our relaxing aroma massage with the use of aromatherapy oils, which help alleviate pain and promote relaxation.

Thai massage is also not suitable in the following cases:

  • Acute infections or inflammations
  • Severe heart conditions
  • Recent surgeries
  • Severe skin problems
  • Osteoporosis

If you suffer from more serious illnesses or medical complications, we recommend consulting with your doctor before booking a Thai massage.

Our goal is to ensure that your massage experience is not only enjoyable but also safe.

Is it normal to feel pain after a Thai massage?

It is common to feel mild pain or muscle soreness after a Thai massage, similar to what you might experience after intense exercise. This is a sign that the muscles have been thoroughly stretched and stimulated. This pain, known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), should be mild and gradually subside.

However, if the pain persists or is too intense, it's a good idea to discuss the massage intensity with the therapist next time to ensure the massage is ideally suited to your body.

Benefits of Thai massage on a massage table

At Eden's Garden, we offer traditional Thai massage on a massage table, also known as "table Thai massage." This method allows us to create an ergonomic and comfortable environment for both the client and the therapist, enhancing the effectiveness and precision of the massage.

Ergonomics and comfort: The massage table provides the therapist with optimal access to all parts of the body, ensuring a higher quality of massage.

Client comfort: The table provides stable support, ideal for clients with back or joint issues.

Flexibility of techniques: The massage table allows the therapist to perform a wider range of techniques tailored to the client's individual needs.
